Unlock Security's RMR Potential for Your Business
DUE TO RECENT growth
in DIY smart home and
AV devices, many custom
integrators have started
exploring different ways to
supplement their business's
revenue. A closely adjacent
market to smart home/AV
is traditional home security.
With many system
integrators already trying
their hand at various levels
of security, it's easy to understand
why this growing
industry offers shelter for
some and expanded opportunities
for others. And,
for many, it's the recurring
monthly revenue (RMR)
that provides the greatest
source of motivation.
RMR provides a steady
and predictable source of
income. Instead of relying
solely on one-time sales
of security hardware, sales
typically include monthly
payments for things like
system monitoring, the
ability to remotely control
the system and receive notifications,
data storage of
video content, and more.
For many integrators
who include security in
their business portfolio,
security-based accounts
provide great opportunities
to cross-sell additional
equipment and services.
Historically alarm systems
have consisted of a panel
(the brain), intrusion and
life safety sensors, and
some way of interacting
with the system - either
a keypad, touchscreen, or
app on a mobile device. But
today, rarely does a security
system stop there.
Over the past several
years, the adoption of
cameras and smart devices
has grown in popularity
to the point of being
the norm rather than the
exception on a typical
security system. Indoor
and outdoor cameras allow
homeowners to see what's
going on in and around
their home 24/7. Today, the
most important camera in
a security dealer's toolbelt
is the doorbell camera.
Homeowners enjoy being
able to view who is at the
front door without having
to leave the comfort of
their living room or while

update at CEDIA Expo 2023
in Denver last month. The

industry along with its
opportunity for RMR is
an advantageous proposition
for many AV system
integrators. If you are an AV
system integrator and haven't
yet considered adding
security to your portfolio, it
may be well worth exploring.
