Immersive Experiences
With everyone's expectations now dramatically
heightened, visitors standing 20 feet
back from an exhibit must still have an experience
as immersive and memorable as the
kid whose nose is against the glass. After all,
humans learn better when we're immersed,
and these experiences create a stronger
imprint versus simply reading a placard on
a wall. " If you care about it, you'll go read
that placard, " Moore concedes. " But if
[you're immersed in it], you get that better
imprint. It's a better overall experience. "
One essential element of immersion
is audio, which, Johnson notes, is always
challenging in museum spaces. It must be
audible, but it mustn't be loud enough to
bleed through the space. This becomes
particularly challenging given varying room
acoustics and product options. " There are
new products out there that allow [visitors]
to have an immersive audio experience
while still gaining some control over the
sound, " Johnson states. LIDAR sensors allow
integrators to customize certain visitor-occupied
areas with specific audio and video.
" [The audio] is not bouncing throughout the
entire space, " Johnson notes. " It also allows
for that unique experience where you can
steer the audio to give [visitors] who might
be four feet apart a different soundtrack to
whatever they're experiencing at the time. "
Augmented Reality on the Horizon
The rise of gamification and augmented
reality (AR) is also on the horizon. These
facilitate a heightened experience versus
virtual reality (VR), which, Moore says, is
really more of a " replacement " experience.
By contrast, with AR, integrators can elevate
the in-person experience. As an example,
Moore cites looking at the Mona Lisa. " If
you walk through [the] experience - [the
Mona Lisa], for example - I can sit there
and stare at it and take that in. But if I have
an AR app, a pair of AR glasses or something
similar, I can get different stats about
the Mona Lisa. " In short, it's taking the " conventional "
visitor experience and adding in
more engagement and interaction.
Technology and Architecture
In that past, technology was largely treated
as an overlay to architecture. " That's not
the case anymore, " Moore opines. These
days, technology is intertwined with architecture.
As a result, integrators must have
deeper insight into the project process:
they must be at the table, working with the
design teams, from day one.
Moore advises integrators and museum
decision-makers to consider adding
supplemental infrastructure. " [It's about]
putting extra things in the walls so that
the museum is not only successful on
day one but also 10 years from now, " he
states. " That way, when [they want to]
revamp their exhibit, you're not ripping
down walls to switch out the technology. "
As we know, budgets and project
timelines can be stringent. As technology
and architecture intertwine, integrators
and clients should think not only about
getting the exhibit open but also ensuring
it's a successful deployment well into
the future.
