WHEN I STEPPED on the Commercial Integrator
editorial team in May, I did not have
the slightest idea of what an integrator does.
I quickly learned there is way more to it than
installing a display in a conference room or a
video wall on the side of a building in a busy
city- there's the hardware, software, audio,
room controls and many other considerations.
I was fully immersed in all things AV at my first
InfoComm show in October in Orlando (See
AV Industry Reunites Again at
InfoComm 2021, page 30).
A college professor once
told me communication is like
the sea around us - we know
it is in our periphery, but most
would not think twice about
it. The similar sentiment can
be applied to AV as well - it is
all around us and many do not
even stop to notice.

It is certainly an exciting time to be an
integrator, according to AVIXA's market
intelligence team, which reports recovery
and long-term economic growth are ahead.
The total pro AV industry reached a peak of
$259 billion in 2019 with revenues before
the COVID-19 pandemic shut down global
economies and caused pro AV revenues to
decline by 17% globally in 2020, more than
the 8% AVIXA's market intelligence team
initially predicted.
However, AVIXA is predicting that robust
growth from 2019 to return in 2022 with
revenues rising by 10%. By 2026, the industry

poised for a comeback, but if I didn't know
any better, I would never have known about
that steep decline.
Once you see all forms of AV, you can't
get out of it. It's like when you buy a car and
see the same make and model all over the
place. After InfoComm, I took a few days to
enjoy Disney World, and after
stepping off a ride, instead of
saying, " Wow, that was such a
great ride, " the first thing out of
my mouth was, " I wonder how
they installed that screen and
what resolution it is because it's
beautiful. "

I saw that firsthand at InfoComm 2021, which
everyone says was a much smaller show than in
years past because of the COVID-19 pandemic,
but it seemed to me to be full of energy, enthusiasm,
and optimism.
