Celebrating
the Good Stuff
BECAUSE COMMERCIAL INTEGRATOR exists
to help integrators run their businesses better,
we inevitably spill lots of ink on the challenges
that commercial AV professionals face and
how they might overcome them. And that's
important because, even though trade media
sometimes gets a bad rap - basically, that
publications are just " rah-rah " about everything
- real journalism outlets like CI measure
our value with a simple yardstick: How eff ectively
do we inform and empower
our audience? But, as we settle
ourselves into 2023, there are
compelling reasons to refl ect on
all the good things manifesting
in our industry right now. This
month's issue captures several.
To start, I'll point to #avtweeps'
As we settle
ourselves into
2023, there
passion for service, which evinces
itself not only on the jobsite but
also in the community. Our associate
editor, Amala Reddie, explores
it with a paean to charitable and
philanthropic activity. Her feature
off ers insight into Sustainability
in AV (SAVe), which launched
in 2022 to combat the climate
crisis and ongoing environmental
degradation. Beyond that, it off ers a glimpse
into how three industry leaders are uniting
their respective organizations around giving
back to the community. Amala's article off ers
actionable insights into how to embark on your
giving-back journey and why it's important to
get organizational buy-in; moreover, it suggests
some community-based projects that might
spark your team's fl ame of giving. Coincidentally,
Alan Brawn's monthly " AV Brains & Brawn "
column addresses a similar subject, drawing
on research to show why volunteering not only
benefi ts the recipient but also helps you.
Meanwhile, our web editor, Alyssa Borelli,
to refl ect
on all the
are compelling
reasons
good things
manifesting in
our industry
right now.
- not only ISE but also CES - is a reminder
of how far we've ascended from the depths
of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ours is a tactile
industry in more ways than one: Technology
professionals naturally want to get their hands
on the latest audiovisual innovations; equally,
though, members of our tight-knit community
want to shake hands, share hugs and party
with our extended AV family. In-person trade
shows - a breeding ground for new connections,
business partnerships and
career advancements - couldn't
have roared back at a more
opportune time.
Speaking of getting out into the
world, I present a piece that illuminates
the many virtues of digital
art. To be sure, there's nothing
wrong with DVLED displays, tiled
LCD videowalls or projected
images showcasing products
and services - aſt er all, some
folks tune into the Super Bowl just
to watch the commercials! - but
there's no getting around the
fact that displays, when used for
that purpose, are trying to get
you to do something (i.e., to try a
product or service). By contrast, digital art exists
to give: to inspire wonder, to evoke emotion, to
induce calmness, to ignite the fi res of creativity.
Drawing on my conversations with digital-art
facilitators CFIRE Inc., Electrosonic and SNA
Displays, I paint a smile-inducing picture of why
we should expect many, many upliſt ing and
inspiring digital-art deployments in commercial
environments in the years ahead.
CI will always be in your corner when you
off ers in-depth coverage of Integrated Systems
Europe (ISE), a show that, as you read this, just
concluded in Barcelona, Spain. The fact that
the new year has kicked off with large, in-person
gatherings of technology professionals

need operational advice or strategic guidance.
But we'll also take time to smell the roses. Not
because we're wearing glasses of that color,
but, rather, because our industry is a pretty
darn great place to be.
