uses the MNEC system to say a phrase.
Once they hear it, all volunteers are
instructed to come back to home base and
report exactly what was said. According
to Peveler, " You'd be amazed how many
times, aſt er 20 minutes, somebody out in
the parking lot comes in and [asks], 'Are
we ever going to do this test or not?' "
Only a test like that can truly confi rm if the
MNEC system is working. If it is, it will cover
every single square foot of the facility.
When integrators do MNEC systems
right, they can help save lives. That should
be reason enough to take the time to stay
invested in these projects. " Once the
school feels comfortable with you as a provider
and sees that you're really invested
as a partner, you're going to get a lot more
business, " Peveler promises. " School
districts have multiple schools. That's
good revenue. Not to mention, once you
become that integrator, there's tons of
classroom technology - and you're going
to get a chance to sell all that once you've
set yourself up as a trusted partner. "
Assistive-Listening Systems
Next, we turn to assistive-listening systems
and how they can address areas beyond
the hearing-loss market. CI draws on the
thought leadership of Sam Nord, vice
president, global channel sales, Listen
Technologies. Studies show that students
with learning challenges, autism, dyslexia
or concentration problems can all benefi t
from assistive-listening systems. These
devices help block out distracting background
noises, thus allowing students to
focus on the instructor and the lesson.
Nord notes an increase in the usage
of Wi-Fi based assistive-listening systems
at the high-school level. He mentions
Listen Technologies' Listen EVERYWHERE
solution, which allows students to stream
multiple-channel audio directly to their
smartphones through a free, fully customizable
app. The discreet solution allows
students to use their personal devices,
which is highly desired these days.
" You get all the benefi ts of a traditional
assistive-listening system, like our traditional
FM or infrared systems, without necessarily
having to check out a secondary
device, " Nord explains. " [Students] then
use their own phone to stream, and, if they
have a hearing aid, they can stream it to a
Bluetooth hearing aid or cochlear implant.
Or [they can] use their own AirPods or
headphones. " This refl ects a best practice
for integrators working in the K-12 market:
reducing inclusion barriers by incorporating
technology that seamlessly fi ts in
students' existing environments.
Standard Bill of Materials
Nord notes that the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) mandates assistive-listening
accommodations. Thus, he says, these systems
should be part of the standard bill of
materials for K-12 clients " ...whether quoting
for interactive whiteboards, monitors,
Communicate, collaborate
and educate effectively
with the next generation
in interactive panels.
