different pixel pitches available from a
vendor. Which one do you use so that the
image will fit your space?
With dvLED, resolution, pixel pitch (or
density!) and physical size are intertwined.
Let's look at how keeping the resolution
fixed at full HD, but varying the pixel pitch,
will commonly impact the screen's physical
size. For any of the pixel pitches below, if
the overall size is made smaller, then the
resulting display will not be full HD.
› 1.2mm is approximately 110 inches
diagonal
› 1.5mm is approximately 130 inches
diagonal
› 2mm is approximately 174 inches
diagonal
› 4mm is approximately 347 inches
diagonal
That simple example clarifies what is
important to consider when specifying this
sort of display. We suggest that this shows
us we need to look at image size, combined
with typical viewing distance, and then select
a pixel pitch that will not result in viewers seeing
pixels. Determining that brings us around
to human visual acuity. That term refers to
what we can see and at what distance.
Human Visual Acuity
We must first understand how the human
eye sees the world. The eye is analog in
nature, and, thus, doesn't see in pixels. We
measure how well the human eye can see in
terms of visual acuity - the clarity or sharpness
of vision. In other words, we're talking
about the eye's ability to recognize small
details with precision. The Snellen Eye Chart
(that's the one with the big E that we've all
seen) is the most common way to determine
visual acuity. It's typically measured in what is
called " arc minutes. " Let's take a moment to
review that.
A circle is divided up into 360 degrees.
A single degree is divided up into 60 arc
minutes. Thus, we measure objects in our
field of view based on how much of an angle
(measured in arc minutes) they consume
(or " subtend " - your technical word of the
day). The Snellen Eye Chart is designed so
you are positioned at a specific distance
away to ensure the line of letters representing
20/20 vision will take up 5 arc minutes
of your vision. The individual elements of the
letters and the spaces (like the lines of an E)
are designed to be 1 arc minute. This means
that, if you have 20/20 vision, you can
differentiate objects with a precision of 1 arc
minute and can see them as separate.
If you move farther back, the angle they
consume will be smaller, meaning you won't
be able to discern those elements as separate.
(That is, you won't be able to read the
E.) If you move closer, the angle consumed
by each element becomes more distinct
from the others. Simple, right? Now, let's
relate that to pixel pitch!
By definition, pixel pitch is the measurement
of the distance between the center
points of two pixels in a dvLED display. As
can be seen in measuring visual acuity, the
farther away from an object you are, the
more area a given angle covers. That's why
