appliance. And the equipment will be expected to be smart
enough to essentially operate itself, making shots, improving
sound and, in general, facilitating the meeting. Solutions
will come through a combination of technological advancements
(hardware and software), leveraging sensors, AI and
the flexibility to integrate monitors, cameras and microphones
into areas besides the front wall of a room. Expect
to see technology integrated into furniture, walls and the
ceiling to allow remote participants to connect with each
person in the room.
Equitable Meeting Experiences
Room designers and AV engineers must work together to
create spaces outfitted with technology to enable people to
have equitable meeting experiences. They must design for a
high-quality in-person and remote experience. Remote participants
must be considered just as important as the people in
the room. AV and IT technology must no longer be relegated
to an architect's afterthought.
The technology must be transparent, and the end solution
should require no more effort to operate than a laptop. I
collaborated on a project where, in addition to the large frontof-room
display and camera, every seat had a dedicated microphone,
monitor and camera. The system is one touch; camera
switching is voice activated; and the active camera always
provides a perfect shot because the cameras are aligned with
the monitors. People naturally look at the person they are addressing.
The meeting participants can get together in a hybrid
environment and maintain a natural meeting and conversational
flow, just as if everyone were in the same room.
The world's most popular collaboration and productivity
platforms and applications will continue to evolve, adding
more intelligence to their tools to empower workforces to accomplish
more, in less time, with a higher degree of accuracy.
People shouldn't have to worry about pressing too many
buttons or being camera operators during a meeting. The technology
should support natural conversation and allow people
to focus on business, rather than on which button to press.
The office of the future will be a continued blend of
technology and space to support people coming together to
collaborate and accomplish work in a setting that is flexible,
that is inspiring and that offers more than just a desk where
people can do their email.
