Roth's focus is making
the QSC user experience
intuitive and easy. She is
a firm believer in " less is
more " and tries to make
her design work as helpful
as possible, utilizing fewer
buttons and more helppage
and graphical cues
to guide the user toward
a positive experience. She
is a fantastic example of
an excellent programmer,
moving from custom-room
programming straight to
manufacturer-UI programming.
(The former continues
to shrink even as the
latter continues to grow.)
Roth is a mom to her
daughter, Lilian, and has a
very supportive husband
whose help allows her to
grow in the workplace. Her
advice to young women
in AV is not to be afraid to
grow your career. She also
advises, " Your labor should
not be given to a company
that doesn't respect work/
life balance. "
When not working, Roth
spends her time as a Girl
Scout troop leader and promoting
STEM to young woman
in the community. Roth
gets recharged when she is
making something with her
hands, whether it is quilting
or her newest hobby: DIY
screen printing.

Over 50
Marc Lavecchia,
owner,
BMA Software
Solutions, Inc.
Most get started in a career
in AV either through music
or through performing arts.
Not Marc Lavecchia. In
1990 to 1991, he was living
in a studio apartment in
Florida and unemployed.
He answered a job ad in the
newspaper for a marketingcommunications
position
at a projector manufacturer
called Ampro. Five weeks
later, Lavecchia attended
his first InfoComm. After
that, he spent nine years
at Crestron Electronics as
the director of the western
region before he launched
BMA Software Solutions, an
independent controls-programming
shop for the commercial
AV industry with his
work partner, Barry Kunz.
" BMA has been WFH
before WFH was even cool, "
Lavecchia states. However,
he has concerns with
fully remote workers. He
had employees that could
not function in a remote
situation. This was measured
easily, since they were not
hitting their programming
milestones, which was costCommercial

ing BMA money. Lavecchia
realizes that we are now in a
different " work normal, " but
he is quick to state that he
never had the option to say,
" I am not coming into the
office. " He proposes, " Just
because you can work from
home does not mean you
should. "
Lavecchia explains that
when " work normal " meant
in person, there was a tribal
learning that took place by
osmosis. Now, it is a whole
different tribal way - online
- where younger generations
with similar interests
chat and share knowledge
virtually.
Technology could have
played a larger role post pandemic.
" COVID should have
been a catalyst for more
sensor technology use, "
states Lavecchia. " There
was an uptick for camera
analytics to report the number
of people in the room,
but we focused too much
on privacy invasion to really
get sensors to be adopted
here in the United States. "
Lavecchia has seen a shift in
focus from large corporate
buildouts towards technology
improvements in certain
vertical markets, such as
casinos, airports, churches
and SLED markets.
Lavecchia saw people
migrating out of California
to get more space and to
stretch their dollars further.
So, like the song from
The B-52's, he decided to
relocate his family and live
in their own " Private Idaho "
- namely, Post Falls, Idaho.
Here, Lavecchia isn't worried
about traffic congestion, but
he's occasionally concerned
that the deer may continue
to knock on his windows
while he's on a Microsoft
Teams call.

Jason Jacoby began their
AV journey 24 years ago as a
studio technician at ESPN,
Inc. Jacoby's AV work history
is impressive with past
positions with AV leaders
Verrex, AVI SPL, McCann
Systems, Shen Milsom &
Wilke and, most recently,
Diversified Systems as a
project manager.
Jacoby is a 100% remote
employee and hasn't
stepped into an office in
about one year. They can
see how 100% remote can
be a detriment to the AV
education process, remembering
their career
and experience learning on
jobsites and in the office
with industry greats such as
Troy Jenson and Felix Robinson.
