Improving DIVERSITY,
EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Starts at the Top of AV Firms
AVIXA and NSCA are taking the lead on the conversation
about changing the face of AV to better represent the
world in which we live with AVIXA's AV Pledge for an
Equitable Future and NSCA's Ignite 2.0 workforce
development initiative. By D. Craig MacCormack
THE CONVERSATION around diversity,
equity and inclusion (DEI) in the AV industry
is becoming more detailed and focused as
more organizations and companies enter
the fray.
One of the latest examples came during
a DEI workshop hosted by NSCA.
" Diversifying the industry wasn't the
stated goal of Ignite, but the NSCA wanted
to double down by focusing on diversity, "
said NSCA director of industry outreach
and media channels Tom LeBlanc during

the organization's recent workshop on
diversity, equity and inclusion.
DEI, says LeBlanc, isn't just an issue that's
focused on finding new talent and recruiting young people into the AV industry. It
also affects " individuals all the way up the
ladder, " he says.
AVIXA officials hadn't made a practice of
dipping their toes into social and political
issues in the past, but that all changed
in May when the association launched
the Diversity Task Force, an internal team

focused on helping members increase their
awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The task force's work reached an important milestone last week with the release of
the AV Industry Pledge for an Equitable Future, a document that asks those who sign it
" to advance inclusive behavior across their
company and the industry. "
The AV Pledge for an Equitable Future is
a commitment to:
› F oster Awareness: Positive change
starts with understanding and acknowledging the existence of systemic racism, leaning in to tough conversations,
and analyzing how we can contribute
to creating a better world.
› T ake Action: Pledge to set measurable
goals, follow through on findings, and
commit resources toward the goal.
