our control, " Berry remarks.
Overcoming Challenges
When a company has existed for as long as
Verrex has, it has seen its share of challenges,
whether internal or exogeneous.
Examples include geopolitical conflict, the
pandemic and The Great Recession, among
others. " It affects us, it affects our clients
[and] it affects the volume of the business, "
Berry observes. " For us, it ultimately forces
us to stay lean, to protect our employees
and conserve cash. " He also notes that
those challenges remind Verrex to reinforce
its relationships with existing clients. " Because
it's your existing client relationships
that ultimately get you through the tough
times that you face, " Berry explains.
Further expounding on overcoming
hard times, Berry states, " With each

downturn, there are opportunities when
the sun does come back out. As we've all
been taught: You strengthen the organization
during the downturn, so you can take
advantage of opportunities when things
do turn around. "
Berry sees potential for future improvement
when it comes to the supply-chain
issues plaguing the industry. " It's an
opportunity for the industry to look in the
mirror and see how we could potentially
prevent these challenges in the future, "
he says. " Again, whether it's onshoring
manufacturing, diversifying technologies
- whatever it may be - I think that we
have to look at doing things differently
so that we don't risk the same challenges
that we face now. "
Berry, a self-described " glass-half-full
kind of guy, " doesn't have many qualms
about the industry. " We're always going to
be in a good place, " he says. " We're like
cats: We're going to land on our feet. What
worries me more as a father and as a gatekeeper
for an organization is [that there are]
things beyond our control. " He mentions,
for example, geopolitics.
" Technology is always evolving, " Berry
says, wrapping up his reflections on Verrex's
75-year (and continuing!) heritage.
" And maybe for the past two months...
two years...it's felt like it's been fast. But
it's also been exciting. " He adds, " We
have to race to keep up with these solutions
- but [that's] a good thing. " The key,
Berry concludes, is to be up to the task of
being open-minded, ready to learn and
willing to test things out.
As the past 75 years have proven, Berry
and his multi-generational family business
