TRANSFORMING SENIOR LIVING
FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Duxbury House - designed by Kentco, EGA Architects and Cutler
Design - won the 2020 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design
awards in the " Best Stand Alone Memory Care " category.
Evoking warm feelings of familiarity. Opened in October of 2020,
Duxbury House at the Village is a memory care residence in an upscale
coastal community in Massachusetts. It features two uniquely small
home-like memory care households. The twelve private resident suites
on each fl oor encircle a country kitchen and dining area, living rooms,
and activity spaces where residents can socialize in group gatherings
or in quiet relaxing conversation with easy access to outdoor patios,
porches, and a sunroom.
Creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere. Incorporating familiar and
home-like elements: Danny Cocio-interior designer and co-owner of
Kentco Corporation-and team created a warm, familiar, home-like
beachside community by incorporating contemporary paintings of
quaint harbors and vintage Hollywood movie posters. Light wood and
white lacquered furnishings remind one of classic oceanside resorts,
with crisp blue and white color schemes. There are green felt-topped
card tables, sleek marble countertops, Chippendale balustrades and
even a piano, a touch inspired by one of the residents.
Patcraft's Crossover resilient in color Beachscape is installed in dining
areas, providing a smooth, sleek surface for safety. These spacious dining
areas open directly into living and recreation rooms where residents relax
or socialze. Cocio installed Patcraft's custom carpet tile for a soft, quiet
surface in these areas. " We stay away from tight, geometric designs in
these projects. For customized colors, we stayed with the dyes that Patcraft
used on other projects, and then just worked from there, " says Cocio.
The color and patterns needed to be perfect for this upscale residence.
" All of these factors came into play with our design. "
Sound absorption. On a typical day, residents mingle at breakfast,
watch a movie or play games, and move from room to room. Some
residents use walkers or canes, while staff roll carts across surfaces to
deliver meal service or recreational equipment. Patcraft resilient and
carpet tile provide quiet surfaces so this busy environment can be a
relaxing place to live.
" We try to ensure sound absorption in certain areas, such as the
dining room, which is very open, " says Cocio. " Both the furniture
and the carpet in the living areas provide some sound absorption. "
