AMENITY SPACE/WELLNESS CENTER

Guided by Quaker values, Friends Homes
offers a Life Plan Community that encourages
a sense of wholeness, wellness, purpose, and
security at a fair cost, so that each resident
may live a fulfilling life. In 2016, Friends
Homes sought to develop a repositioning
master plan to integrate their 20-acre Guilford
campus, 55-acre West campus, and a
newly acquired 21-acre property into one
cohesive community. Initial planning showed
that new community spaces would be essential
in bringing together residents from
both campuses and unifying the growing
community. It was a priority to incorporate a
new Wellness Center and Bistro that would
provide much needed community space.
The new Wellness Center and Bistro serves
the entire FHI community, including family
and guests, and strengthens the connection
between the West and Guilford campuses.
The Wellness Center and Bistro addition
establishes an interactive community area
and dining option for residents. It offers
various programs, including a fitness room,
sports court for pickleball, basketball and
volleyball, and a large pool area, promoting
exercise, healthy living, and community engagement.
The biophilic design using natural
wood materials, a green wall, and ample
natural light creates a calm and comforting
space for residents during workouts and
social activities. The pool is a double height
space that creates visual connections to the
exterior and other parts of the building while
still maintaining a certain level of privacy. The
addition is now a central destination for the
community and extends into intentionally
designed gathering spaces in the improved
exterior courtyard.
