REMODEL/RENOVATION COMPETITION
The Virginian - Lobby Area [Fairfax, Va.]

BEFORE
THE VIRGINIAN LOBBY renovation transformed
an outdated space into a welcoming, functional,
and stunning environment. The project's primary
goals were to enhance resident engagement, create
a memorable first impression for visitors, and
provide a functional area for staff and resident
interactions. By integrating innovative design
elements that promote connectivity, the lobby has
now become a central hub of activity.
Space optimization was key, with underutilized
areas repurposed into inviting seating areas and
a charming café, making the lobby a vibrant and
functional space. Two grand staircases enhance
the flow, connecting the lobby to surrounding
amenities and creating visual and sensory connections
throughout the area.
Natural elements are thoughtfully incorporated
into the design, blending historical inspiration
with modern detailing. Cultural richness is
further added through a Washington Monument
art piece and an art gallery overlooking the lobby.
The renovation also involved significant structural
upgrades and a complete overhaul of the
MEP systems, ensuring the space is both beautiful
and functional. The redesigned lobby now serves
as the heart of The Virginian, offering a versatile
and sophisticated environment that supports

daily activities, community
events, and fosters interaction
among residents, visitors, and
staff, all while enhancing the
quality of life for residents.
JURY COMMENTS:
* The biophilic elements and
natural light are excellent
additions, creating a more
inviting and healthier
environment. The stairs are a
fantastic feature for promoting
fitness and well-being. The overall
improvements are beautiful,
with art that thoughtfully connects to nature and the
surrounding community.
* The combination of form, shape, and line is disciplined
and intentional. Complimentary floor and ceiling details,
and repetition of diagonal lines throughout (from the
fabrics, flooring, beams, and tile to the architectural
woodwork) add interest and continuity. Each space feels
unique but gives a beautiful sense of belonging.
* What strikes me most is the transformation of the
volume of space into not only a functional environment
but an aesthetically pleasing first look or first
experience for visitors and residents alike.
