Sagewood Senior Living Community - Café PHOENIX

The new venue would be just
at home in a resort as it is for
the Sagewood community. The
new modern industrial aesthetic
venue provides many inviting
spaces as the easily accessed
" booth " and the community
table - perfect for groups as
well as a lone diner. Appreciate
the attention to materials and to
details such as the inclusion of
themed restaurant displays.

Sagewood is nestled within
Arizona's Sonoran Desert and boasts
impressive resort-style living. The
Canyon Café was outdated and
underutilized. However, its location
adjacent to a reading room and
courtyard gave the space potential as
a social destination.
Before the redesign, Spellman
Brady and Sagewood's design committee
studied local café styles and
functionality. They worked with food
and beverage to provide the necessary
requirements for an expanded menu
and met with staff and residents to
understand their goals. The main
objective was to fully rebrand the café
and establish a modern neighborhood
market. This was accomplished
by replacing the unused convenience
store with a full-service kitchen and
completely revamp the café, including
the logo and menu.
The Canyon Café's industrial style
features an exposed ceiling, mixed
materials, and sliding doors. The café
boasts neutral finishes with pops of
color in the artwork, accessories,
and banquette. The local landscape
inspired an artisanal desertscape film
added to the hallway windows for
privacy and warmth; local artists were
commissioned to paint stylized desert
plants on the brick. The connection
to nature and eclectic ambience was
further emphasized with colorful
glass bottles and ceramics mixed with
faux and dried plants. Rich textures
and sophisticated design details create
a charming café inviting to all.
The full kitchen allows the café to
seamlessly transition from morning
coffee to an evening nightcap, while
the backlit display shelf signals when
the bar is open. Providing a variety
of seating options was crucial to the
café's flexibility. There are beautiful
details to be discovered no matter
where people congregate.

Jury comments:
* This project really pushed the
boundaries of " senior living " into
the commercial retail world. We
shouldn't have to leave behind
edgy contemporary design. Very
nice integration of the support
kitchen to make this bistro
successful.
* Beautiful reinvisioning of a dated
café and convenience mart into

within the existing walls of a
once dreary space. An amazing
level of detail comprised
of regional and industrial
materials differentiates a
variety of gathering spots. The
articulated ceiling including
wood and acoustic baffles
counterbalances the hard
surfaces of tile, brick and metal,
adding not only interest, but
sound control
to the space.
Furniture settings
are spaciously
arranged to
facilitate easy
circulation. And
the introduction
of a complete
food service,
along with happy
hour beverages,
assures enjoyment
and sociability
throughout the day.
