As a futurist, how do you look at the future?
It begins with a curiosity and desire to understand how
change happens. The future is not a time and place
that we will arrive at. Any futurist will tell you there
are many histories, there are many perspectives that
have come from those histories, and therefore, there
are many futures. We should not be led by fear when
thinking about the future simply because there are
so many possibilities of how a future can pan out. We
don't have any more or less time than we did a hundred
years ago. The difference is how we're spending that
time and how much control we feel in that process.
How do we design a more empathetic future?
When you talk about designing for empathy, to me that
is the headline of the story. Technology is the vehicle. It's
going to either speed us up or slow us down depending
on what's happening culturally and socially.
As community and connectivity are more important
than ever, how do concepts like the metaverse fit into
that idea?
Web1 was about connecting people to information.
Web2, what we're in now, is about connecting people
to each other. Web3 is this idea that not only can we blur
the lines between our digital and physical lives, but it's
also forcing a new conversation about social norms. The
whole notion of decentralization is all about ownership.
We have not necessarily owned any of the systems that
we participated in. This is an opportunity for us to talk
about what it would look like when ownership becomes
more distributed.
Why is it important for us to challenge the status quo?
The status quo is structural and systemic and was not
done with the average person in mind. The push to
maintain that is not to the benefit of everyday people
in everyday society. An example of that would be the
9-to-5 workday. Why does the work week have to be
five days? Just because something has been a certain
way for a long time doesn't mean it has to continue to
be that way. We have to confront all of those things and
decide if we want to continue this way.
What is your goal as a futurist?
My hope is that people see there are multiple futures.
There isn't just one that's decided by some guy. [The
future] should be more democratized, and it can be
more democratized as long as everybody feels like they
have a voice and are more intentional about where life is
going. As long as we have some of that, it's exciting.
