SETTING THE TONE
Pantone Color Institute's Leatrice Eiseman explores the world of color
Early on, Leatrice Eiseman's friends and family recognized her
penchant for color and encouraged her passion by consulting her for
home décor or fashion advice. Growing up in Baltimore, her parents
also gave her the freedom to repaint her room whenever she felt
compelled to (which was quite often) under one condition: She would
do the grunt work.
Now based in Bainbridge Island, Washington, Eiseman studied
both design and psychology in college, setting the stage for her graduate
work at UCLA where she completed a practicum in color. Today,
the renowned color specialist helms the Eiseman Center for Color
Information and Training and is the executive director of the Pantone
Color Institute, which provides color consulting and trend forecasting.
The minds behind selecting Pantone's Color of the Year, Eiseman
and her global team of experts " comb the world looking for new color
influences, " she says, drawing inspiration from entertainment, fashion,
new technology, and socioeconomic conditions. For 2024's Peach Fuzz,
a gentle tone that emanates a warm aura, " we looked toward our need
for nurturing, empathy, and compassion as well as our imaginings
of a more peaceful future, " Eiesman says. " An idea as much as a feeling,
[the color] awakens our senses to the comforting presence of tactility and
cocooned warmth. "
Despite the cultural rise and fall of various colors, Eiseman has a
different outlook. Her work involves identifying hues across the entire
spectrum, so naturally, she doesn't want to see any color fade away. " It's
sometimes a matter of a refresh, perhaps tweaking the color to bring up a
different undertone within a given shade or combining it in a novel way
with other colors, " she says.
Eiseman says she has noticed a newfound interest in color theory,
noting that it includes much more than the basic knowledge of the color
wheel-it encompasses a deeper understanding of consumer psychology
and trends. " Color has an enormous effect on a given space as it is the
most influential component in creating a mood, " she adds. " It can enhance
a space more than any other design element. It is the first thing that
registers when you enter and the most memorable when leaving. " hd
