open table projects By Roxana Becerril, Matt Dougherty, and Gabrielle Echevarrieta DINING IN STYLE Nine F&B spots showcase the intersection of design and cuisine Theodora Brooklyn, New York The goal at Theodora, which opened earlier this year at the intersection of two bustling streets in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood, was to create a respite that reflected the restaurant's Mediterranean-inspired menu. Locally based firm Home Studios embraced pre-existing architectural elements but updated them to evoke a more sculpted look. For example, a new layer of raked plaster was added to emphasize the arch of the ceiling. An abstract mural from local artists Ben Lai and Kimmy Quillin makes an immediate impression in the front dining area, creating a bit of mystique to Theodora's otherwise inviting tone. Further inside, custom wood seating and reclaimed wood details complement handcrafted ceramic pendant lamps and rustic sconces that appear throughout. " I aimed to infuse the venue with an eclectic charm reminiscent of Old-World cities, " says Home Studios founder Oliver Haslegrave. " [The design thus] evokes a timeless elegance.
