This new state-of-the-art women's and
children's facility by University Hospital is a
first for South Texas and one of only a handful
of such facilities in the country. Offering the
highest level of care in the region with Level IV
Maternal Fetal Medicine and Level IV Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit designations, the 14-story,
698,000-square-foot hospital in the South Texas
Medical Center will be a beacon of outstanding,
comprehensive care. In support of a familycentered
care approach, Marmon Mok Architecture
in association with ZGF designed the 250+
bed tower with the intention of providing an
environment of empathy and equity. Evidencebased
design principals and respect for the
diversity of human experience within such a
setting informed the programming and design
of a dedicated pediatric emergency department,
private NICU and pediatric rooms, and women's
urgent care center. In a feat of engineering, a
monumental truss bridges a new 900 car garage
connecting it directly to the hospital. Spanning
90 feet and supporting the 10 floors above, it
eliminates the need for sheer walls or columns,
ensuring a bright, airy, and welcoming arrival
experience. Numerous high performance design
strategies support the project's sustainability
goals in pursuit of LEED Silver®
.
The bright and airy entry lobby and an unobstructed driveway beneath the tower is made possible by a unique
monumental truss. Spanning 90 feet on the third level of the tower, it bears the load of the 10 stories above,
eliminating the need for sheer walls or heavy columns and making for a brighter, more welcoming arrival

Designed to represent the cutting-edge medical care provided within, the high-performance façade of the new
UHS Women's and Children's tower features striking pleated metal panels and white spandrel glass, which

Intended to leverage the healing powers of natural light, art, and connection to nature and community,
communal spaces on patient floors feature expansive windows and materials that help soften the experience
of the clinical environment while maintaining high standards of compliance for cleaning and infection control.
