The new Riley Hospital for Children at IU
Top: When visitors enter the
lobby, they are surrounded by
natural lighting, public and
more private waiting areas, open
spaces, and a grand view of the
original front façade of Riley
Hospital for Children that adorns
one wall of the atrium. Bottom: A
standardized labor and delivery
room, all private suites, are
designed to provide a comfortable
environment for the labor process
while including modern medical
technology. Three of the LDR
rooms also include birthing tubs.

Health Maternity Tower centralizes all inpatient
childbirth and newborn care offered at three IU
Health hospitals in downtown Indianapolis. The
lobby is surrounded by soft, naturally lit, and
timeless spaces with a grand view of the original
front façade of Riley Hospital for Children on the
west wall of the atrium. The design is inspired by
a neutral and minimalist aesthetic with pops of
color and bold geometry, creating moments of
surprise and discovery within the space while
celebrating the rich history of the institution. The
new Tower achieves Indiana University Health's
goal of improving the health of its patients and
community through innovation and excellence
in care, education, research, and service.
ver physically marks the paradigm shift from
illness to wellness through a state-of-the-art
sports medicine center. The soaring arch-shaped
roof represents a distinct landmark visible from
the interstate and boldly announces UCHealth's
brand. The double-height lobby is the heart of
the building and showcases open views of the
training fields, PT/sports performance gym,
and golf course. In the clinics, daylight is prioritized
for the care team, and is achieved through
strategically positioned light wells. Customized
artwork inspires performance and celebrates
movement, solidifying its role at the center of
healthy living and wellness.

Top: Numerous two-story spaces
allow light to penetrate further and
strengthen the connection between
areas. This fluidity inspires and
motivates athletes and caregivers
alike, with natural light playing an
integral part of the caregiving and
healing processes. Left: The surgical
floor tops the building, providing
a sheltered place away from the
hub for respite. Visitors are able to
view the turf below and golf course
through large expanses of glazing
overlooking the Colorado foothills.
