JASON F. MCLENNAN JOINS
PERKINS&WILL
PERKINS&WILL (CHICAGO) named Jason F. McLennan
chief sustainability officer. Additionally,
McLennan's firm, McLennan Design (Bainbridge
Island, Wash.), merged with Perkins&Will.
McLennan is creator of the Living Building Challenge
and co-author of the WELL building standard.
According to a release from Perkins&Will,
McLennan Design will work over the next year on
several initiatives, including creating new tools that facilitate regenerative
design and planning across the firm; leading new research into habitat
impacts, biophilia, and nature-based architectural solutions; and expanding
consulting on net-zero operational carbon and lower embodied carbon
buildings, as well as healthy materials.
NEW LEASE ON LIFE
TO IMPROVE ACCESS to affordable healthcare services, Cornell Scott-Hill
Health Center (New Haven, Conn.) collaborated with Svigals + Partners
(New Haven, Conn.) to replace an older clinic that the organization had
outgrown. A nearby former funeral home provided a spacious and convenient
new location but presented some challenges-not the least of which
was changing local perceptions of the building.
A refreshed exterior design was the first step in delivering that message,
including covering the dark-brick building with a light stucco, removing
the faux-mansard roof appliqué, and erecting a new canopy over the entrance
to establish a new professional identity. Inside, a full-gut renovation
organized the 10,000-square-foot program between two floors, with medical
and dental offices at street level and behavioral health programs and a
staff break room in the newly refinished basement. To create a welcoming
arrival experience, the waiting room incorporates glazed walls and doors,
LED lighting, wood-look flooring, and a glass screen wall with a foliage-inspired
