THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER, Eric
Klinenberg, author, Helen Gould
Shepard Professor of Social Science,
and director of the Institute
for Public Knowledge at New York
University, has taken a dive deep
into a variety of topics through his
books and articles, including the
rise of living alone, the impacts of
climate change, and emergency
management. During his opening
keynote presentation at the HCD
Conference on Sunday, Oct. 9,
Klinenberg will share insight into
his deeply researched conception
of social infrastructure, and how
we can build it together. The talk
will center on issues he unpacks in
his book " Palaces for the People:
How Social Infrastructure Can
Help Fight Inequality, Polarization,
and the Decline of Civic Life. "
Klinenberg, who defines social
infrastructure as " the physical
places and organizations that
shape the way people interact, "
will discuss how these places
where people gather and linger-
libraries, childcare centers, bookstores,
parks, and more-are critical
to strengthening communities
and how this infrastructure can
help solve some of our most pressing
challenges, including isolation,
crime, education, and addiction.
When asked what's the one takeaway
he hopes attendees will gain
from his talk, Klinenberg says,
" Social infrastructure-the physical
places that shape our interactions-is
just as real, and just as
consequential, as the infrastructure
for energy, transit, and communications.
It affects our capacity
to care for each other, every day
and in crises. Too often, the institutions
we rely on fail to see how
social infrastructure matters, and
they miss easy opportunities to
make us all healthier, happier, and
more cohesive. "

Pentecost, director of the Center for Health Systems & Design at
Texas A&M University

MONDAY, OCT. 10, 2:15-3:30 P.M.
BREAKING THROUGH FINALE
Healthcare Design's conceptual design competition focused on
innovation and imagination, Breaking Through, will bring four
teams to the stage for the third and fi nal round of the program
sponsored by Durasein. The teams will present their concepts
live, and audience members will vote for their favorite in real
time. The winner will receive a $10,000 grand prize.
Enjoy the chance to check out the famed San Antonio
River Walk and enjoy some local eats during this
year's networking party, to be held from 5:30-7:30
p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, at Casa Rio. The event is
sponsored by AVA and will include a Mexican fi esta
complete with tamales and margaritas and a live
mariachi band.
