RESTORE HARMONY: COMMUNITY
HEALING CENTERS

IN RESPONSE TO the growing refugee crisis around the world, this concept
strives to provide an architectural solution to help support both refugees and
their host communities. This vision proposes hospitals as globally connected
Community Healing Centers where holistic healing services are off ered.
Recognizing that vulnerable populations like refugees might be more susceptible
to mental health disorders and that host communities could harbor fear
regarding fi nancial, vocational, and food security when a refugee population
arrives, the concept focuses on the eight dimensions of well-being for all. This
one-stop-shop typology sets out to merge what hospitals and social organizations
can best off er these groups to achieve harmony between them. The
architecture will respond to unique contexts and occupants, celebrating the
interplay of local and refugee cultures, languages, traditions, etc. Allowing users
to customize the built environment is another response aimed at building a
sense of attachment and control for refugees. Meanwhile, 3-D printing would
be utilized to provide endless possibilities for customization (and time savings)
while a kit-of-parts design off ers lots of opportunities for adaptation by site but
with the dimensions of well-being always integrated.
ENVISIONING A NEW MODEL
OF MATERNAL HEALTH FOR
THE U.S.

THIS PROPOSAL SETS out to understand the maternal health care
crisis in the United States and propose a range of planning and
design solutions to address it. With the highest maternal mortality
rate of any wealthy nation in the world, the U.S. each year
sees people die of pregnancy-related causes at double the rate
of countries with similar income levels. The crisis particularly
aff ects Black and Native American people as well as those living
in rural areas. This team argues that current physician-centric
care models are inadequate to address the crisis and looks to
new economic, social, technological, and physical models. Although
presenting varied solutions, the team proposes that each
unique response would address fi ve overarching principles:
meet people where they are, both physically and emotionally;
ensure planning and delivery of services are provided by trusted
and informed community members; envision reproductive
health services as comprehensive and lifelong; respect cultural
beliefs and sensitivities; and colocate services with additional
behavioral and social support services. Specifi cally, the concept
calls for Community-Based Maternal Health Homes integrated
within communities experiencing these challenges as well as
Portable Health Clinics that might be located in existing community
institutions, with both complemented by telehealth and
outreach programs.
