OR MORE THAN 50 years, Family Tree Clinic in Minneapolis
has been providing reproductive and sexual
health services to underserved populations in Minneapolis
and St. Paul, Minn.
The organization reports a client base consisting
of 55 percent Black, indigenous, and people of color;
60 percent LGBTQ; and 70 percent who live at incomes
below the poverty line. Leaders sought to create
a new clinic environment that would serve as a beacon to its users. The
existing Family Tree Clinic was located in an aging former elementary
school, which had been retrofitted to allow wheelchair access but was
limited in space, making it difficult to expand in place to accommodate a
growing waiting list of clients.
Family Tree Clinic partnered with Perkins&Will's social purpose design
team (Minneapolis), which provides pro bono professional services to
nonprofits, to plan its next phase of growth and establish an overall vision
for what a new clinic could look like. The goal was to increase the number of
exam rooms to expand care capacity and continue to offer community services
including parenting classes, legal clinics, peer education programs,
and LGBTQ drop-in sessions for youth.
The resulting clinic opened in November 2021, strategically located
one mile south of the downtown Minneapolis core and with connection
to local transit and regional interstate access. The 17,000-square-foot facility
has the capacity to reach an additional 10,000 clients per year and is
designed with two main principles in mind: (1) creating an inviting oasis
for patients, staff, and community members and (2) providing a safe, private
place of respite.
To achieve these often-opposing ideas, the first floor of the building
houses community and staff spaces surrounded by glass, welcoming visitors
inside. A protected courtyard helps provide daylight to interior public
spaces and create connections to the outdoors.
The clinic proper is situated on the second floor toward the back of the
building to provide privacy. The space includes a waiting room and eight
exam rooms that line a single corridor with views to the exterior at both ends.
Because many users of the building have experienced trauma, the project
team focused on design elements that create a sense of safety. For example,
a skylight illuminates a bright yellow vertical circulation core
that provides clear wayfinding. Large views outdoors offer a
sense of calm, while frosted narrow windows in exam rooms
maintain privacy while giving access to natural light.
