INDUSTRY MOURNS HEALTHCARE

DEREK PARKER
Architect Derek Parker passed away at his home
in Tiburon, Calif., on April 18. He was 88 years old.
Born in England, Parker earned his architecture license
in 1958.
After traveling the world, he moved to San Francisco,
where in 1960 he joined architecture, planning,
and design firm Anshen + Allen (the firm was acquired by Stantec in 2010.)
In 1964, he assumed a leadership role at Anshen + Allen, which he held
for nearly 50 years. During his tenure, he guided the firm to a focus on the
healthcare and academic sectors, leading the design and planning of more
than 50 hospitals and biomedical facilities in 15 countries and receiving
more than 75 awards for his achievements.
Within the healthcare design industry, specifically, Parker delivered
breakthrough innovation in healthcare facilities and provided visionary
leadership. His projects included the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital
at Stanford University Medical Center, San Diego Children's Hospital,
St. Joseph's, Sacred Heart Medical Center, and Community Hospital of
the Monterey Peninsula.
He received multiple honors throughout his career, including recognition
as one of Healthcare Design magazine's Most Influential People in
Healthcare Design for several years. In 2012, he was honored by The Center
for Health Design with its Changemaker award.
ROBIN GUENTHER
Architect Robin Guenther, a principal at Perkins&Will
and a global leader in sustainable healthcare design,
died in New York City on May 6 after a prolonged battle
with cancer. She was 68 years old.
Guenther was a pioneer in the field of architecture;
her work focused on the intersection of
sustainability policy and health design. She directed the sustainable
design strategies of numerous innovative healthcare projects in the
U.S. and abroad, including the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford,
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and Memorial Sloan Kettering
Monmouth Ambulatory Care Center.
Additionally, she played a key role in the development of Perkins&Will's
2008 Precautionary List, a public compilation of substances of concern
commonly found in building products worldwide, which helped ignite an
industry movement toward healthier built environments and more transparent
product manufacturing.
Outside of practicing architecture, Guenther was a senior advisor for
Healthcare Without Harm and coordinated the organization's Green
Guide for Healthcare, the sector's first quantifiable sustainable design,
construction, and operations toolkit.
In 2005, Robin received the Center for Health Design's Changemaker
award for her leadership and innovation in the design of healing environments.
In 2010, Healthcare Design magazine named her to its Most Influential
People in Healthcare Design list. And in 2018, she was honored with
a Women in Design award from Healthcare Design and Contract magazines.
