Healthcare Design's fourth Breaking Through
conceptual design competition welcomed four
fi nalist teams to the main stage at the 2024 HCD
Conference to present their innovative solutions,
with SmithGroup's team taking home top honors

DESIGNED TO REIMAGINE and push the boundaries of what could be possible
in healthcare design if none of the usual rules-regulations, deadlines,
codes, and budgetary constraints-were in play, Healthcare Design's fourth
Breaking Through conceptual design competition took to the main stage
at the 2024 Healthcare Design Conference + Expo in Indianapolis. There,
four fi nalist teams faced off to become the 2024 winner and take home the
grand prize of $10,000.
Those teams represented SmithGroup, HGA, Perkins&Will, and Gresham
Smith. Each had 10 minutes to present their concepts live on stage-the
last phase of a three-phase process that began earlier this year.
Prior to the fi nale, the teams fi rst submitted concept statements that detailed
a challenge they anticipated in the future delivery of healthcare and
their proposed boundary-pushing solution for it. From there, a jury of industry
experts selected 13 concepts they felt held enough promise to move
forward for further development; those semifinalists next prepared detail-rich
presentations that dove more deeply into both the challenge and
solutions. Then, during the fi nale at the HCD Conference, the four fi nalist
teams presented their concepts to conference attendees, who voted in real
time via text to determine the winner.
On the following pages, fi nd details on the 2024 winner-SmithGroup's
Decaf Hospital-as well as the other fi nalist concepts. Congratulations to
all four teams for rising to the challenge and embracing true innovation in
healthcare design.

The Judging Process: Initial proposals were submitted in March and included a concept statement, outline of the specifi c
challenge that the concept solves, and an overview of its innovative design elements. The 41 submissions were divided between jurors
in a blind judging; jurors were not given projects associated with their own organizations. Of those Phase 1 submissions, 13 were
chosen by the jury to advance to Phase 2, during which detail-rich presentations were submitted that included graphics to support the
conceptual design. Jurors affi liated with the fi rms that made it to this round of judging were recused from the process. During the July
judging, four fi nalists were chosen to present their ideas live during a keynote session at the HCD Conference in October. After viewing
the four presentations, attendees voted for their favorite via text messaging to choose the $10,000 grand prize winner.
