Describe your
business in one
sentence.
I always think of Parkin as
a family - we have shared
goals and work together to
achieve them.
What role does
collaboration play in
your process? How do
you ensure the right
people have a voice at
the design table?
Collaboration is
essential to everything
we do at Parkin. In every
project, we encourage
all members of the
team senior or junior,
engineers, client user
groups and patients
to voice their unique
insights. This information
is then discussed
with the design team.
Design team members

are expected to come
to meetings prepared
to present their
discoveries. Whether
in person or remote
collaboration, we employ
and have successfully
used many methods to
ensure that all members
at the table feel heard
and have contributed
meaningfully to the
group discussions.

What's one critical
question your team
always asks clients
in initial project
meetings? Why?
Do you have a design
charter, or simply, why
do you want to do this
project and does it fit
into a larger plan? This
response is critical to
helping our design team
make the appropriate
design decisions and
put valuable healthcare
dollars to work in the
most efficient possible
way. Knowing the
conceptual goals, via a
design charter, and how
the project fits within a
greater master plan from
any organization can go
a long way into improving
design outcomes. This
allows teams to focus
their design attention to

those things that matter
most to the client.
How will the design
of healthcare spaces
change to meet the
demands of today's
consumers?
The pandemic has shown
us how we can work
differently and question
assumptions made on
how things were done.
For example, healthcare
appointments are now
scheduled, which
means that the need for
numerous waiting areas
is virtually eliminated.
If this practice was to
continue, it would impact
our designs drastically. It
has also become evident
that we must find ways
to leverage together
design and technology
to improve client
workflow and efficiencies.
With the shortage of
nursing and medical
staff, improvements to
workflow and efficiencies
will positively impact
operation, frontline
workers and patients.
