collaboration play in
your process? How do
you ensure the right
people have a voice at
the design table?
Each design challenge in the
healthcare world inevitably
affects a broad collection
of stakeholders, so identifying and engaging the full
spectrum of perspectives is
absolutely critical to ultimate
success of each effort. In the
early stages, JTM Architects
works with the client's leadership team to develop a list
of stakeholder " resources "
representing each group.
Those individuals should be

at the " table "
in the initial
phases to help
identify the real
questions to
be answered,
establishing the
initial direction-
then re-engaged
at critical milestones throughout the process
to validate or provide course
correction when necessary.
Stakeholder " ownership "
helps guarantee success!
What's one major design
or care delivery trend
that's shaping your work

today? And
how so?
That's easy!
The " irresistible
force " of
COVID-19
has impacted
literally every
aspect of
healthcare (as
well as our
daily lives) and
raised awareness of the
limitations we were previously
designing into each facility!
The virus has impacted the
entire process-a patient's
ability to even access care,
patient/staff circulation
within each facility, the size/

number/arrangement of
care and support spaces,
and even the nature of
materials/finishes used.
We are forced to rethink all
systems and technologies
within our buildings. The
greatest challenge is the
need to accommodate
rapid adjustments/shifts
for unexpected future
functions-all with minimal
disruption and cost.

What approach does
your firm use to design
spaces that support
care delivery today
but provide enough
flexibility for unknowns
of the future?
The need to design for
uncertain future is here.
We are living the times
where future is unfolding
faster than ever predicted.
We had to analyze our
current approach and
very quickly adapt to new
pace and requirements.
The interesting thing is no
one is ahead in this time.
We are all headed toward
uncertain times together.

Flexibility is the new
design strategy for us.
The healthcare industry
has always been and will
be ahead in setting new
standards at a fast pace.
We have quickly adapted
to providing spaces that
meet requirements today
but can very easily adapt
to new business model in
near future if needed.
What role does
collaboration play in
your process? How do
you ensure the right
people have a voice at
the design table?
We cannot emphasize

enough the need to
collaborate with several
aspects necessary for
successful delivery of each
project. Before we begin
the design, we make sure
that we have coordinated
with business owner for
project vision and budget,

professional healthcare team
to understand the intent
of healthcare provision,
local municipality for all
zoning and building-related
issues, engineering team
for technical aspects,
and construction team
for making it happen on
ground. Each project is
unique and needs to have
a customized strategy for
delivery. We have a range
of professionals within our
team who analyze each
project at initial stage to
ensure all critical voices are
part of design exercise.
