ARTISANAL PASSION

A BETTER WAY FORWARD

Kate Hume's interiors reflect her personal
devotion to tactile environments that
blend vintage, patinaed goods of varied
styles with local artisanal objects and
global influences. Her work is marked by
bold patterns, textural layers, and intense
hues and her style has been referred to
as casually luxurious. Now, her rich,
layered approach can be experienced in
Élan: The Interior Design of Kate Hume,
a new book from Rizzoli New York.

Research and design lab SPACE10 and publishing house gestalten
brought together world-renowned experts in architecture,
design, research, entrepreneurship, city planning, and community
leadership to answer crucial questions about the future of
urban living for the new book The Ideal City. Via projects from
53 cities in 30 different countries, the tome features insight from
such varied voices as architect Bjarke Ingels, urban designer Jan
Gehl, the United Nations, and a small community-led policing
program in the Kwanlin Dün First Nation in Canada.

Beyond interiors, the tome also highlights
the collaborative work the Amsterdambased designer has undertaken with
her husband, Frans van der Heijden.
Together, they design furniture and
decorative objects that follow the same
narrative as Hume's interiors-saturated
hues, textural depth, and the perception
of age and enjoyment. Van der Heijden
also is credited for the photography
featured in the book.

At the core of the effort is the belief that the cities of tomorrow
must be resourceful, accessible, shared, safe, and desirable.
The Ideal City takes a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to
address questions like: What kind of cities do we want to live in?
What do we believe is important for a good life? And what makes
a good home for all of us?
" Today, cities are not meeting the essential needs of a big portion
of the people living there, " says Simon Caspersen, co-founder of
SPACE10, IKEA's research and design lab in Copenhagen.
" Simultaneously, urban areas are the biggest driver of the climate
crisis. The challenges are extensive, but so are the opportunities.
We really find ourselves at a crossroads. We can continue to
hurtle down this well-trodden path, which we know where it
leads, or we can explore a new way forward. "
The result of the collaboration is a volume of solutions and
approaches that intend to inspire action and lead to a better
everyday life. Casperson likens The Ideal City to a collaborative
cookbook for cities, " stuffed with recipes on how to create a
better home for humanity, while taking care of our planet. "

LIVING ART
Seattle-based designer Brian Paquette
believes interiors are " a living extension
of art meant to be touched, used,
and admired. " This sentiment can be
experienced throughout the projects
featured on the pages of his new
book, At Home: Evocative and ArtForward Interiors.
The intention driving Paquette's style
is for spaces that tell the layered stories
of his clients-who they have been,
who they are in the present, and who
they aspire to be. Palettes and objects
are selected to both conjure fond
memories and inspire a life well-lived
and rich in experiences, all brought
together in spaces that are comfortable,
contemporary, and completely functional.

Columbia as well. Photography for
