Connected to Practice
" We are seeing the importance of exposing students to the real world-
ensuring that they are connected to practice as well as academics, "
says Denise Rush, dean of the School of Interior Architecture at Boston
Architectural College. " We really involve the design community with our
academic programs. "
According to Rush, COVID has created opportunities to rethink the delivery
of education to local and global students now and in a post-pandemic era.
" We can see where students still need a virtual or physical place to gather
for a sense of community, " she says. Certainly, they want to be able to
sign in to an asynchronous online program or class where they can learn as
their schedule permits. Other students want to be in a physical classroom,
so there might need to be more fine-tuning in a hybrid educational setting.
" I'm looking forward to seeing how we can be more interactive in our online
environment, " says Rush.
Many of their design projects now are about social impact and
how they can make the world a better place. According to
Rush, students are looking for human interest stories-not a
particular typology such as healthcare or hospitality, but figuring
out where there is a need and how they can utilize their design
skills to meet that need. " Social impact and social justice are
what students are saying they want once they get out into the
real world, " she adds.
Igniting the excitement for design in high school students is
also important work. " Our Summer Academy exposes them to
spatial design, to architecture, landscape architecture, interior
architecture, and design, " says Rush. This is where they
start to get hands-on experience. They are exposed to some
basic foundational model making. They learn about space and
dynamic teamwork. She adds, " We love the program, and we
really would like to reach further, maybe to middle school. "
