Cultural Shift
After a thorough examination of what has been accomplished and where
a concept missed the mark, then acquired knowledge must be applied.
The pandemic has certainly provided ample learning opportunities from
difficult lessons. " The past year and a half has been tough for everybody.
We all went into business survival mode, and there were so many
unknowns, " Xavier says.
Leaders in every segment have reconsidered how interior design has always
been done, and they want to improve upon it, not upend it. " I think the
conventional design model of offering our services and then charging clients
is not exclusive anymore. There is a variety of ways that people can structure
their businesses-whether they are acting as investors, or creating products,
or exploring media opportunities. Many of my clients have their hands in
other buckets, and I think that's a trend that's going to continue. They are
true creative entrepreneurs, and there's a lot of opportunity out there
for them right now, " notes Kuhteubl.
Indeed, changing direction has also meant new streams of income, clients, and
projects-an unexpected but welcome silver lining in the midst of uncertainty.
" After the initial shock, everybody got settled in, " Xavier says. " Then our
industry had this shift, and all of a sudden, everyone was busy again. We
began having conversations with our clients about how to handle this work
coming in that they didn't want to turn down but weren't prepared to handle. "

Experts Wanted
A key to dealing with upticks or downturns is to seek out
help as needed, rather than to trying to take on everything
alone or with limited staff on hand. " One of my big lessons
with our virtual shift was to hire experts. We no longer need
one full-time person trying to tackle office management,
customer service, marketing, and procurement. From CAD to
branding to a fractional CFO, we are a fierce team of as-needed
professionals. It's a total game-changer, " Funk explains.
Kuhteubl adds that designers can do more of what they want to
do when they delegate tasks. " You actually can do it all, but
you have to have the right support team in place, " she urges,
" and you won't get to that seven-figure revenue number without it.
The common denominator is that support is required. "
Fostering connections is important not only for business,
but also to build a like-minded community. " Find your people,
your tribe, vendors, or a great mentor. Share the struggles
and the victories with our incredible design community.
We need each other, " Funk says.
