sizes so she could add the wet
bar for entertainment.

A popular shade brings bravado
to a family kitchen

had recently bought a new
house and needed some assistance carrying out the vision for their new
kitchen. Her role was to provide solutions to improve the flow, function
and cabinet design in the space, while staying within the same framework.
The clients also wanted an island large enough to accommodate four children and their various activities.
" Although we worked on this kitchen before the pandemic and the construction was mostly completed before it really hit, the design proved to be
a lifesaver, " said Kerl, who is the owner of Greer, S.C.-based Kustom Home
Design. " The island is perfectly planned to allow for eating, but it also doubles
as a science lab for at-home schooling, a homework station and a cooking/
prep area. "
The wife also had a vision for a bold and funky use of color and texture, and
because she had great taste, the designer felt confident in her client's choices.

GOING WITH GOLD AND BLUE HUES

Kerl and her client, who has a very colorful personality, talked about being daring and not timid
with the palette at the beginning of the project.
The Cambria quartz countertop the client selected
with the rich blue highlights became the driving
force behind the rest of the color choices in the
kitchen, including the paint for the island.
" She was originally thinking black but decided
on blue since it is more traditional and not as modern, " said Kerl. " Blue can stand the test of time
more than black. "
Visits to several showrooms led to the find
of the Elkay sink in the same shade, as well as
the backsplash tile in the main kitchen and
wet bar addition. The herringbone pattern was
also selected for its fun but traditional look, as
a stacked tile would have erred on the more
modern side.
The client has a preference for gold jewelry, so
she chose this tone for the light fixtures, faucets,
hardware and detailing on the island stools -
