choosing a 24-in. refrigerator column, creating
counter space next to the sink and on both sides
of the stove.
" Even if we hadn't opened up the other wall, that
would have made a big difference, " said Hufnagel.
MODERN SOLUTIONS

Taking advantage of modern appliances and practices was key to making the best use of the limited
space with which the designer had to work. Although she replaced the freestanding refrigerator
with a smaller column, she did not want the clients
to lose out on cold storage, so she added freezer
drawers next to the stove.
" By splitting up the fridge and freezer, it visually
opened up the kitchen and the space next to the
dining room doorway, " she said.
A built-in coffeemaker was added to the cabinetry on the stove side of the kitchen. Hufnagel recessed it 4 inches into the wall so it would
not stick out. The coffeemaker cabinet is raised
a bit from the counter, and the plinth below is
tiled to match the backsplash, which was done
to ensure there would be no water damage to
the cabinet from cleaning the countertop. Beneath the coffee maker, cabinet drawers hold
pots and pans.
The 28-in., single-bowl sink next to the refrigerator now has ample adjacent counter space, and
to save that countertop for tasks, Hufnagel moved
the microwave into the cabinetry above. A double
pullout trash container is hidden in the bottom
cabinet next to the paneled dishwasher.

STYLE SELECTIONS

In this small, transitional kitchen, the cabinets and trim were painted white.
Stainless-steel appliances were paired with a backsplash of metal and glass
tile, while the quartz countertops are white with gray veining. Hufnagel
maintained consistency with the finishes of the faucets and hardware, creating a soothing uniformity.
" You don't want drama in a little space like this, " she said. For the flooring,
she chose a medium charcoal vinyl surface, which would stand up to the
couple's two dogs. Several of the appliances are paneled to match the cabinets.
" Paneling everything made the room visually calm and didn't break up the
space, " said the designer. " When all the surfaces are consistent vertically, it
automatically looks a little bigger. "
She added recessed lighting in the ceiling and under the cabinets. There
are no hanging fixtures to break up the sightline. On the new wall of cabinets,
light flows through the upper cabinet glass doors. Hufnagel said using glass
inserts, rather than solid doors for the upper cabinets along this wall, visually
opened up the room, while adding a touch of glam. It went from being a
claustrophobic space to being very user-friendly - the kind of room you want
to be in and cook in.

