At just 13 by 9 feet, Meyers had a small footprint with which to work. She created a cabinetry
plan that wrapped around a corner into the dining
area without encroaching on the table placement.
And by moving the laundry, she expected to pick
up a few more feet.
CHALLENGE 2: WORKING AROUND
A BAD NEWS BUMP OUT
To begin the project, Meyers visited the site with
a contractor who examined the laundry closet to
make sure it could be removed. With an affirmative response, she thought she had come up with
a solution for improving the footprint.
During demolition, which the homeowner did
on his own, a bump out was discovered in the
laundry closet behind the appliances. Because
of the way it tied into the roof joists, it could not
be removed. Meyers lost 2 feet of space she had
counted on gaining and had to build out the wall
to the depth of the bump out to create a straight line. It required redesigning
the kitchen layout and cabinetry specifications.
" I had the cabinetry order in the vendor system, " said the designer. " All I
needed to do was hit the button. I was probably just waiting for the deposit
or something. Thank goodness I hadn't done it. "
Originally, she had specified spacious corner-wedge cabinets but changed
the order to a blind corner cabinet on one end and a small lazy Susan and
narrow corner cabinet on the other.
" There were some really tense moments there, " said Meyers. " I was able to
come up with a revised plan that still gave him all the function he wanted. I
really had to put on my problem-solving hat in a big way. "
Although the designer hadn't purposefully waited to order the cabinetry, she
is now an advocate for holding out on cabinetry until after demo is complete
and all possible 'surprises' are discovered.
In addition to adjusting the cabinet layout, she redesigned the island, which
she had planned as a curved, 7-ft.-long showpiece. Without the space to accommodate it, she switched to a peninsula.
" I had some real anxiety at first about how that would work because it really
does flow out into the foyer, " said Meyers, who added cubbies to the end that
faces the foyer to create a drop zone.
