Removing the walls allowed natural light to
come through the west-facing windows and
flood the kitchen. The designer was not able to
incorporate any additional windows on the main
wall because that was for cabinetry. She chose a
primarily white color scheme with some open
shelves and glass-front cabinets that reflect
sunshine during the day and create an airier
feeling. She also white-washed the ceiling to make
the space larger and brighter.
" We did this instead of drywalling over so we
could see the knots in the wood and maintain
some of the original character, " said Bishop.
To improve the couple's storage needs, she took
inventory of their former situation to see where
she could make improvements. She was able to
determine how many drawers versus doors they
would need and included a cabinet in the island
with a door front and a deep rollout on the bottom to easily access and store
their extra-tall oils and vinegars.
" The cabinet that was integrated around the post was made to the same
size for symmetry, " said Bishop, " and although void, it was finished with a
fixed panel and hardware to mimic a functioning cabinet. "
In the perimeter cabinets, she included two large drawers for platters, pots
and pans and small appliances. The pantry stores dry goods, and the cabinets
below the bar house office supplies and a printer.
The husband really loves modern and neutral, and the wife loves pops of
color and farmhouse style, so Bishop needed to address these needs while
honoring the character of the original home.
" Marrying the architecture of a house with an updated look that also reflects
the homeowner's personalities takes careful planning and consideration
when they are not all geared in the same style, " she explained.
The designer layered neutral shades for the countertops, cabinets and
backsplash, working with clean lines and classic shapes. She hung colorful
artwork created by the homeowner and opted for a high contrast between
the cabinet colors to give them pop and a modern palette.
To maintain the character of the home, the

without an apron-front sink.

island serves as a dining table,
and a smaller area on the
main stretch can be used for
working from home and/or
interacting with the cook.
original posts and beams were sanded down
and stained darker rather than cladded, and
the tongue-and-groove ceiling was left intact
but white-washed for a fresher appearance. The
home's former terracotta floor tile was replaced
with brushed hardwood that complements the
beams and layers in more farmhouse style.
REASONS BEHIND THE KITCHEN
PRODUCT SELECTION
Bishop chose an engineered brushed hardwood
flooring in a slightly darker shade than the overall
palette. She did not want to compete with the
darker color on the island out of concern that the
combination would fall flat. As the family was
planning to adopt a new puppy into the home,
they also needed a more durable flooring material.
