A kitchen with a good
layout trades Tuscan for
farmhouse style
By refacing the cabinets, the clients saved on
HEN A YOUNG FAMILY PURCHASED a Little Silver, N.J., home they loved
with a kitchen they hated, they knew immediately that an update
was in order. With an understanding of the benefi ts of refacing cabinetry,
the homeowners reached out to Nazareth, Pa.-based Kitchen
Magic to fi nd out whether that option could give them a space with the
style they wanted.
According to design consultant Jill Moskowitz, the kitchen had a fabulous
footprint and was functional, but visually it was unappealing. For example,
the two-tone island with cherry corbels on an antique white base looked
awkward and did not complement the perimeter cabinets, either. Th e dated
Tuscan style was too ornate for the clients' taste.
Nevertheless, there were some aspects that would be too costly to update
- the fl ooring and wall tile - and the cabinets were in good condition. Rather
than replace cabinets, requiring a total renovation, a refresh was in order.
Moskowitz's challenge lay in fi nding the right palette and features to make
the space cohesive.
UPDATING A KITCHEN FOR SIMPLICITY
Th e main goals of the project were stylistic. Th e clients sought a modern
space with a rustic look - a far cry from the existing ornamental style. Many
of the couple's furnishings and lighting fi xtures had come from Restoration
Hardware, so Moskowitz geared the kitchen updates toward that feel.

budget and benefi ted the environment. Removing
the raised-panel cherry cabinet doors and replacing
them with classic Windham-style Shaker
doors was an important fi rst step in achieving the
new look.
Several curvilinear elements in the kitchen also
needed to go. Th ere were already plenty of focal
points - from vast windows to a cutout into the
adjacent living space. Squaring the lines from the
countertop to the hardware simplifi ed the design
and brought it forward a couple of decades.
