Expanding the number of bathrooms was another
key goal of the renovation. One smaller
bath stayed the same size, but it now has a door
that leads to the new deck. This " beach bathroom "
serves as a first stop when coming in from the lake
and has the home's only tub, making it also the
future kids' bathroom.
A second bathroom near the two guest bedrooms
was moved to the opposite side of the
house to allow the bedrooms to gain lake views.
Designed around the style of the home, it features
brown field tile with hints of gray and blue.
" It has that look of sand, ripples or waves, " said
Maurer. " That was our inspiration tile, which led
the way for the rest of the bathroom. "
The primary bathroom - part of the new suite
made possible by one of the additions - includes
a large walk-in shower to accommodate the
homeowners, who do not use a tub. Their most
important request was to have dedicated vanities,
so Maurer reconfigured the architect's blueprints
again and made it happen. The room is bright and
simple with a mix of brushed-nickel and pewter
hardware and fixtures. The shiplap backsplash
gives a nod to the beachy style of the home and ties
in with elements of the kitchen design.
The new wing is home to a generous closet
where the clients asked for a bit more bling. Maurer
met their request with luxurious dark-stained
cabinets, textured hardware and light fixtures that
resemble flower petals and twinkle when turned
on.
COVID-19 CHALLENGES
This big project kicked off in January 2020 with
the plan that the family would get to spend at least
part of the 2020 summer at the finished house.
When construction stopped in March because
of the pandemic, Maurer had to manage the delivery
of items coming from states that were open
when Michigan was not and find off-site storage
because the house had only been gutted and was
not yet closed.
Once work recommenced, the team played
catch-up, and with concerns about possible delays,
Maurer ordered items like furniture earlier than
she normally would. Overall, she struggled not
with material shortages but issues storing products
waiting to be installed. The project took longer
than expected, and it wasn't until October 2020
that any part of the home became livable.
If designers have always had contingency plans,
that has taken on new meaning since 2020. Where
there used to be hiccups, today it's important to
plan for the unexpected by making decisions earlier
in a project and knowing that extra time or
expense may be required.

