its openness with its waning ability to capture
warmth and hot moisture. After looking at layouts
with even larger showers, the clients had to
compromise a bit to keep the elements contained.
Where they would not compromise was the window,
which they asked for in an even larger size
than what was proposed. To maintain privacy,
orchids were added to the windowsill.
Inside the double shower, a 19-in.-high builtin
bench runs the length of the back wall, and the
showerheads were placed nearby to keep water
splash away from the opening as much as possible.
Accessible over a low threshold, the shower will
accommodate the homeowners for years to come.
Outside the shower, Bartone added a custom-designed
bench with Lucite legs and indoor-outdoor
fabric to provide space for sitting and drying off. The
builders installed heated flooring, and the smallscale
pattern of the marble tile hinders slipping.
Custom vanities have drawers for easily seeing and
accessing contents, and bar pulls are easy to grasp.
Nearby, the toilet closet is wheelchair accessible.
USE & STYLE IN THE POWDER ROOMS
The spacious home includes two powder rooms
- one for guests, which is located near the front
door, and one for the family, which sits off the
kitchen. Bartone ensured durability in both spaces
with washable wallpaper, but that didn't mean she
sacrificed on style.
The guest powder room features a console sink
with a marble top and living bronze frame and
faucet, which the client chose. Bartone built the

design off the unit, sourcing a wallcovering with
a zigzag print and painting the ceiling to look
like silvery wallpaper. Aged-brass sconces with
alabaster shades surround a patinaed mirror and
coordinate with the console.
" It needed to have high visual impact because
it was the main guest powder room, " said the designer.
" We wanted it to be more luxurious than
the other bathrooms. "
The family powder room is more functional
with a custom vanity with drawers for storage.
Bartone chose rounded light fixtures to soften the
hard lines of the vanity and mirror. The scrubbable
wallpaper features an organic twig pattern, representing
the natural view from the window, which
is topped by a custom Roman shade.
" I love the neutral textures and the little pop of
color in each room, " said Bartone. " The builder
had chosen the nature-inspired interior architectural
selections, and I wanted to stay within that
neutral theme but balance it out with texture. "
However, mixing neutrals is not as easy as it
sounds.
" I spent a lot of time looking at scale and linear
versus organic patterns, " she said. " It took a long
time to get all the fabric and wallpaper and drapery
singing in harmony with each other. "
When working with a neutral palette, combining
patterns and textures brings interest to spaces
without the need for color. Yet even when there are
no contrasting hues, attention to pattern size and
line is critical to making sure all elements work
together as they should.

