Local Essence
HBA calls on Tulum's setting and artisan legacy for a rich, dynamic design

ramatic 20-foot-tall doors fashioned out of Tzalam wood grown
in southern Mexico are the first hints of the craftsmanship
that pervade Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya. The handiwork of
an artisan from outside Mérida, " the scale of the doors alone makes a
bold statement at the entry. Closer inspection reveals the beauty of
the wood's natural grain, coloration, and carvings, " says Miguel Baeza,
partner at the San Francisco office of HBA, the design firm responsible
for bringing the 349-room resort to life.
Set amid lush mangroves, Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya is an homage
to the culture and landscape of the Yucatán Peninsula. " Simplistic
materiality allows the form and spirit of the interiors to cohesively
blend with the organic surroundings, " explains HBA San Francisco
partner Meghann Day, noting how the resulting " warm, comfortable
environments incite relaxation and exploration with visual appeal. "
Injecting dynamism in the lobby, for instance, is a feature installation
that honors the area's rope-making traditions. " The texture and
varying lengths of the ropes generate different shadows throughout
the day, creating a transformative experience from morning to night, "
points out HBA San Francisco associate Jacob Royster. These ropes
are complemented by light travertine, polished black granite flooring
composed of tiles that recall indigenous designs, and wood showcased
in a reception desk reassembled from one three-ton fallen tree.
