Dyer Brown and Richmond International breathe new life into a Boston landmark

efore plunging into the renovation of the Langham, Boston, local
architect Dyer Brown spent ample time devoted to research, delving
into the 1920s and the " architectural and design styles of that era's
traditional, grand bank buildings, " says Brent Zeigler, the firm's president.
The 312-room Langham, Boston first opened in 1922 as the Federal
Reserve Bank of Boston, and Dyer Brown, along with London-based Richmond
International-which handled the interiors-conjured the banks of yore
wherever possible. A Federal Reserve seal embedded in the terrazzo floor of
the new restaurant Grana, for instance, was preserved, as were two murals by
artist N.C. Wyeth delineating scenes from national banking history that now
grace the Wyeth Event Room, formerly the office of the bank's president.
In partnership with the Boston Landmarks Commission, Dyer Brown
embarked on a complete restoration of the granite façade, " working with
consultants to repoint deteriorating mortar, reseal windows, repair the stone
cornice, and clean the masonry, " explains Zeigler. New awnings, ramps,
signage, and exterior lighting were also incorporated.
One standout is the main entrance's bronze-paneled canopy, which
" takes inspiration from the original interior design elements-especially the
decorative coffered ceiling of the Wyeth Event Room-to complement the
Beaux Arts-style architecture, " points out Zeigler.
Inside, the grand stair, linking the lower dining floors with ballrooms and
meeting spaces above, is one of Zeigler's favorite features. There is also plenty
of stone, selected for its " durability, luxurious character, and neutral color, "
adds Zeigler, as well as brass finishes and wood, the latter of which dominates
casual hangout the Fed in the forms of a bar, flooring, wall panels, and
millwork " to make the space feel more intimate, cozy, and refined. " Richmond
International, which has designed several Langham properties, also chose
a deep green palette suggestive of the U.S. dollar, and in the guestrooms,
transformed cellarettes into trunks to evoke vintage travel.
Such an extensive overhaul, of course, also brings challenges. Before Grana
debuted, that room once boasted a skylight that had been filled in some years
ago. To recreate it, resin panels came to the rescue. When illuminated from
behind, they create diffuse lighting, says Zeigler, " that provides the feel of
natural daylight. "
