Panoramic Escape
ESG transforms a dark lounge into an airy urban retreat atop the Viceroy Chicago

A
top the Viceroy Chicago, natural light and stunning vistas fill Pandan,
an airy hangout that takes cues from classic rooftop atriums and
" how these jewel boxes of greenery and life contrast with the urban
landscape and industrial nature of the city, " explains Megan Eckhoff, vice
president of ESG Architecture & Design.
While the Minneapolis firm pressed on with reimagining the Gold Coast
hotel's formerly dark Devereaux into the welcoming Pandan, the lounge's
forthcoming Southeast Asian-influenced menu was revealed. This knowledge
sparked the design team to stitch another layer of moody warmth into the
narrative by incorporating the likes of tactile plaster, woven textiles, and
whimsical restroom wallpaper prints.
" A palette of light-toned woods, rich sea-inspired blues, and
layered neutrals were carefully chosen to complement the overall
concept, giving the space a sense of vibrancy and freshness, "
says Melissa Metzler, principal and director of interiors at ESG.
Versatility was essential to Eckhoff and Metzler's design
scheme, exemplified through such elements as the durable
yet inviting flooring composed of large-format porcelain
tiles that resemble wood-like herringbone patterns. " The
furniture selection, layout, and finishes prioritize both optimal
utilization for daily operations and effortless reconfiguration to
accommodate larger gatherings, " adds Metzler. A previously
covered wall of windows, for example, is now sought out for its
cozy seating groupings and soft drapery " that plays off the light
filtering through, " points out Eckhoff.
During its Devereaux days, the interior " heavily emphasized
the bar, obscuring the spectacular panoramic views, " recalls
Metzler. " Recognizing the inflexibility of the original bar design,
we strategically reduced its footprint. This move transformed
the bar into a more intimate and exclusive focal point, drawing
visitors through the space toward the views. "
Now, the bar opens to the pool deck via a folding glass
wall, and its fluted stone cladding is an earthy contrast to the
columns dressed in glossy, teal-hued Zellige tile, " our nod to
Lake Michigan, " as Eckhoff puts it. Existing ceiling heights were
limited throughout, but in this central area, she continues, ESG
successfully bumped it up subtly, adding in wood beams with
integrated lighting to elicit a glow that makes the room feel
decidedly " more expansive. " ❙❘❚
This and opposite page: Pandan's sumptuous palette blends lighttoned
wood, ocean-inspired hues, and layered textures, while the bar
features a striking fluted stone front that adds an earthy elegance
