Hope
The founders of the
Outdoorist Oath
are here to help you
make a diff erence in
a practical way. By

AFTER MANY DECADES OF FALSE
starts and missed opportunities,
a new initiative in the outdoor
recreation industry has begun
to take another stab at creating
a cultural environment that is
diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
Known simply as the Outdoorist
Oath, this recently formed nonprofi
t made its formal debut here
at the 2022 Outdoor Retailer
Snow Show. Created by a consortium
of four DEI activists for
the benefi t of the general public,
the Oath aims to off er outdoor
enthusiasts an educational pathway
toward a personal practice of
behavior that will help to make

others around them feel safe and
welcome on public lands. It also
aims to foster a passionate desire
to protect these natural spaces
for future generations.
The Oath aims to address two
primary problems: The negative
impacts of climate change on the
environment, and the historic
systems of oppression that limit
access for marginalized communities
to the natural world. A core
principle of the educational model
that the organizers have defi ned is
the role that individuals can play to
create substantive change.
" The key thing is to be able to
acknowledge that the scope of the

problems is huge and depressing,
but I have a role to play, " says Outdoorist
Oath cofounder and social
activist José González. " I can act in
that role and in coordination with
others who share this understanding
to have an impact for the better
world I want to have. "
Being able to tackle both of those
problems together is a key factor
in how the Oath becomes a reality.

says that individual members of the
environmental movement can benefi
t from a little guidance to turn their
desire to make a diff erence into a
practical way of life in the outdoors.
" With the Outdoorist Oath,
what we do is guide you through
the creation of your own personal
compass, " Moreno says, " So you
understand the outdoors and
you understand what actions are
available for you, and only you,
to take to protect both the people
and the planet. "
Not unlike the principles of
Leave No Trace or the Land
Ethic prescribed by Aldo Leopold,
the Outdoorist Oath intends
to give outdoor folks the tools
they need to be respectful of
the people and cultural traditions
they encounter while in
