guides, inviting creatives and
speakers, and hosting social
gatherings. The All In Ice Fest
was hosted by Scarpa mentees
Liz Sahagún and Claire Larson
and others.
Sahagún, a Mexican-American
alpinist and neuroscientist,
picked up rock climbing in 2017.
She's the founder of the Journey
to 30 project-in one season, she
climbed more than 30 ice routes
with 30 people from underrepresented
groups. " My goal is to
be a well-rounded alpinist so I
can experience different kinds
of mountains in different kinds
of ways, " she says. " I also want
to instruct and mentor others. "
Sahagún's mentor is top mixed
climber Katie Bono, who has
ascents up to M13- and holds the
women's speed-climbing record
on Mount Rainier (4:58) and
Denali (21:06).
Claire Larson is an alpine
climber who, in 2019, signed up
for transgender athlete Nikki
Smith's LGBTQ+ clinic at the
Bozeman Ice Fest, which inspired
her to become an AMGA
(American Mountain Guides
Association) Alpine Climbing
guide. Smith is an outdoor
industry veteran, photographer,
writer, and guidebook author
with 150 first ascents. This year
for SAMI, Larson partnered with
Smith. Larson says the lessons
she aims to pass on after completing
the program are to " teach
LGBTQIA2S+ climbers to be safe
and self-sufficient in the mountains
and simply exist unapologetically
in these spaces. "
