THE BIO LINE ON BETH WALD'S INSTAGRAM
profile gives you a goood idea of her motivation
behind the lens: " It's an amazing gift to be
allowed into people's lives. I try to honor that
by making the most honest photos that I can, "
she writes. That ethos of authenticity permeates
the award-winning photographer's years
of work in Afghanistan, which culminated with
a monthlong solo trip in the middle of the winter
in 2008, from which most of the photos in
this selection come.
Wald, who is currently documenting the
varied lives of people around the town of El
Rito, New Mexico, whre she lives, has shot for
publications including National Geographic,

Smithsonian, and Outside alongside commercial
work for brands including Nikon,
Patagonia, and The North Face. She began
traveling to the remote Wakhan Corridor in
Afghanistan in 2004 on a project with famed
conservation biologist George Schaller. " It's an
epic journey, off the grid for months, " she says. " I
wanted to be doing this kind of work, combining
adventure in really remote areas with some
other cultural and environmental purpose. For
any kind of conservation efforts, you need to
have a deep understanding of local peoples and
cultures and bring them into the conversation. "
While she has a passion for adventure travel
and photographing the lives of people across
the globe, Wald thinks it's essential to empower
photographers from those communities. " We
should really work hard to lift up the voices of
the people who are trying to document their
own communities, " she says. And she is walking
the walk: In 2016, she mentored Sonam
Choeki Lama, a local journalism student, during
a shoot in Nepal, and Lama is now making
movies about her home country. " Finding those
people who are taking the next step and interested
in telling stories about their communities
is the way we really learn about a place, about
people, and about solutions, " Wald says.
