The healing
power of food
nostalgia
W
e've all got food
memories that act as
time machines. For me, a
Ploughman's lunch will
forever transport me to
pub lunches by the sea in Devon with my
late, beloved dad, auntie and uncle (who
had a penchant for a pickled onion). A
bowl of fresh, garlic-y tzatziki sends me
straight to teenage holidays in Kefalonia,
while my mum's lasagne was the thing I
dreamed of in hospital after the birth of my
kids. She now has dementia and will never
cook it again, so I make it when we visit.
I've triumphed in making it my daughter's
favourite dinner, hoping she'll also hanker
after it for comfort after she flies my nest.
A recent poll found food triggered
memories even more than old photos, and
it's not just older generations harking back
- 29% of Gen Z eat foods they consider
nostalgic at least once a week (not the rice
pudding or Angel Delight that top the list
of national favourites though, we'd wager).
Future comforts
Perhaps pancakes,
smoothies and avo on
toast will one day have us
longing for the past
