We're seated beside the 3,000-year-old Terme di
Saturnia Natural Hot Spring, nestled in the Tuscan
hills, enjoying our evening meal in the resort's 1919
restaurant. It's dark and the heavens have opened in
spectacular style. As I sip a glass of delicious (local)
white wine and devour a plate of mouth-watering beef
ragù pasta, the lightning dances on the water - it's a
dramatic sight and a memorable start to our stay.
SPRING INTO ACTION
Once a humble farmhouse, Terme di Saturnia is
now a luxurious five-star wellness resort centred
around a thermal spring, which runs through the
medieval village region of Maremma. Roman soldiers
once bathed in the mineral-salt rich waters to soothe
their aching muscles and accelerate healing. With
anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, the
waters are particularly good for respiratory, skin and
osteoarticular conditions. I can't wait to experience the
age-old wellness practice of sulphur bathing.

The next morning, after admiring the incredible view
of undulating green countryside from the windows of
our elegant suite, I adorn my fluffy robe and slippers and
head down to breakfast. The atmosphere is relaxed and
the range of food on offer is exceptional -there's even
a juicer so you can create a fresh drink of your choice.
After breakfast I relax on a stylish sun bed around the
main thermal spa (several smaller spa pools are dotted
around) noting how the hotel's interior palette has been
inspired by the beautiful azure tone of the water.
RESTORING ORDER
There is a method to the bathing: walk (or swim)
through a narrow, shallow cold water pool - its icy
water feels exhilarating - then take a hydro massage
under cascading, warm waterfalls, before stepping into
the main, hot spa. It feels like a wonderfully warm
bath - despite the strong smell of sulphur (think eggs),
which is a by-product of the thermal process. As the
natural bubbles fizz up to the surface, it's as if there's a
life-force emanating from the rocks below.
An algae called bio-plankton grows spontaneously in
the spring and I spot one bather applying it to her skin
to improve her complexion (I'm not that brave). There's
something rather special about the experience: I feel
reborn. On certain evenings they even hold special
late-night sessions so you can bathe under the stars.
