to articulate myself to my emotional regulation, " he says. " I
don't have meetings before 11 and I wake up when I wake up.
If I prioritise sleep and nutrition, everything is easy. That's a
big shift for me. "
But he's human, too. " I have weeks where I think 'f*ck,
I've eaten badly, I feel like shit, I need to turn this around'. I
love carrot cake and I love fries. Watching YouTube for hours
is a vice too. " Even his workouts often happen late at night,
like at 10pm. " It's just the time I have, " he shrugs.
MAKING TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS
Steven explains that a vital part of balancing his hectic career
is making time for his relationship with girlfriend Melanie
Vaz Lopez.
" We schedule our time. We do couples' therapy once a week
and it's great to have a medium and a carved-out space to sit
down and talk about the relationship. I've learned from
interviewing relationship therapists - if you don't listen to
your partner, you'll have to listen to them in the divorce court. "
They're currently planning to expand their family. " We're
trying for a baby at the moment, so we'll see how that goes.
My brother has three kids under six, and seeing the impact on
his schedule and priorities, watching someone who's got my
DNA fundamentally switch, almost shocked me. I don't have
a clue what's coming. "
FINDING A 'REASON FOR BEING'
Perhaps surprisingly, Steven considers himself an introvert.
" My ideal situation is to be alone. I don't like public events, I
don't go to parties. Being in the public eye really started when
I became a Dragon, so I had to put systems in place to stay
focused. I've made my life simpler. I wake up, work, go
home, sleep - and tomorrow is the same. "
In his mind, Flight Studio represents his " ikigai " -a
Japanese concept meaning " reason for being " -and his " last
dance " in his career. " I've done lots in my life. I've got a
software business, I've worked in biotech and marketing, but
my last dance in my career is building Flight Studio. "
