Cortisol levels rise and fall throughout the
We're all aware of cortisol, right? Known as the
'stress hormone', it's part of our bodies' 'fight
or flight' response. But in recent months TikTok
has been full of fake claims that high levels lead
to 'cortisol face'- facial swelling and puffiness.
Experts have debunked the dodgy diagnosis,
pointing the finger at diet, allergies, reactions
to medication and lack of sleep. And yet the
cortisol witch-hunt continues, with surges
blamed for low sex drive, acne and sugar
addiction. Some influencers are even touting
the benefits of a 'cortisol cocktail', which in fact
day. We do know that the hormone controls
our sleep-wake cycle, with a very gradual
uptick occurring from around 3am. This helps us
'come to' in the morning. When stressed, an
early-hours spike can make us wake up sooner
than planned, unable to nod off again easily.
High levels do lead to issues, such as chronic
raised blood sugar, and affect how we regulate
our emotions. We need cortisol for our bodies
to function properly, but if you feel stress levels
rising, try breathwork techniques for slower,
deeper breathing - not a hokey online cure. B
