It's official: the world is becoming kinder.
The Charities Aid Foundation declared a
record level of global generosity in 2024
- its World Giving Index found 4.3 billion
people volunteered time, donated money
to a good cause or helped someone they
didn't know in the month before being
polled. Benevolent Indonesia topped the
league for the seventh year running.
The Royal Hospital for Children,
Glasgow has hired a 'gamer in
residence' to provide some
light relief on its wards. The
role involves playing video
games with young patients to
relieve boredom, boost the
children's social interactions
and create a fun distraction
during treatment. Mario Kart
has been the go-to choice,
the hospital's charity reports.
In the bag
Oh, we do like to be beside
the seaside, don't we? Well,
in the UK, beaches have had
a glow up! The Marine
Conservation Society reports
an 80% reduction in the
number of discarded carrier
bags. Plastic straws were
also recorded on 5% fewer
beaches than in 2022, and
there was a 14% drop in the
number of cotton budsticks
found year on year, which
the society is hailing as
proof that bans on these
single-use products in the
UK are having an effect.

carrier bag charges, working, "
says the society's beachwatch
manager Lizzie Price.
