Social wellness clubs are
building micro-communities
that combat loneliness
leave behind our everyday
responsibilities and develop a deeper
connection to who we are, adopting
a different aspect of identity to our
home and working identities. "
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Nutrition is a strong focus, too. Unlike
the classic gym offering a vending
machine full of energy bars and protein powders, the social
wellness clubs place as much importance on what you put
into your body as how you attempt to sculpt it.
" What you eat has a huge impact on your mood, " says
nutritional therapist Alex Allan. " Taking expensive
supplements and gels without getting the basics right first is
like pouring petrol into a broken engine. "
Surrenne has a café with a menu curated by scientific
and nutrition experts, while Virgin Active clubs have
incorporated Dean's Kauai restaurants - there are 14 in the
UK, with more to come. " A big part of what we do
is nutritional advice, " explains Dean. " But we do not

dictate any specific
diet. We're all for real,
nutrient-dense food,
available when you want it. "
A DAILY HIGHLIGHT
So, is this the end for the
old-school gym? " There's still a place for them, but
our purpose is to change people's lives for the better
with wellness, so we need to be more, " says Dean.
" The personal trainers are no longer just trainers,
they're coaches. They not only show an individual
how to run on a treadmill or lift weights, they sit and
have a coffee with them and talk about non-exercise,
asking how they're feeling on their recover day and
how they're sleeping. "
The evolution of social wellness clubs is a victory
for businesses and consumers alike. " The sooner
people achieve their goals, the more motivated they
become and the less likely they are to leave the
club, " Dean continues. " A gym business sees a big
proportion of members join, but eventually leave. If
you say 'What would you rather do? Sit on the couch
and watch Netflix or get up at 6am to train?', for the
majority of people, it would be the first choice.
" You need to be more than a gym. You need to be
the place people want to be seven days a week - you
have to be the highlight of someone's day. " B
