SUMMER 2023 Yasmin Wilks SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER How did you get into the Logistics field? " After university, I was looking for a career that allowed me to use my maths and engineering skills in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. I joined Gist as a Sustainability and Engineering Graduate - combining both my passion for the environment and problem-solving skills. " Logistics has long been a male-dominated space, what is it like to work in this sector as a woman? " While studying engineering, I was often one of only a few women in the room and so logistics has never felt uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the lack of diversity is noticeable. I feel like I have a responsibility to make a difference and push to change the gender bias. I have not had a negative experience in my career and see real opportunity to progress in logistics. " Who is your role model? " I always look up to women who share my drive and have successfully used their determination to be impactful. For example, I admire Roberta Kirosingh for championing diversity - her startups help empower young, disabled people into politics and improve their working conditions. " What advice can you offer to women who want a career in logistics? " Logistics offers a wide variety of roles and therefore opportunity to transfer your skills in ways you may not have expected! Don't let being 'different' to the industry norm hold you back from the possibility of excelling. The graduate scheme was perfect for me to learn and see all the possible opportunities.
